You can receive a Nobel prize nomination in the categories of literature, physics, chemistry, medicine, economics, or the Nobel peace prize. Each year the Nobel committee sends invitations out to universities, scientists, politicians, and many other famous academic individuals to submit a candidate for nomination. The committee then reviews the nominees and presents the winners in each category.

Famous nobel laureates (those who have received the prize) include Marie Curie (physics, 1903), Ivan Pavlov (medicine, 1904), Theodore Roosevelt (peace, 1906), Rudyard Kipling (literature, 1908), Woodrow Wilson (peace, 1919), Albert Einstein (physics, 1921), etc.

Heckme is right, and don't forget, Al Gore won it last year!

Also noteworthy is the fact that the nominators are chosen so that as many countries and universities as possible are represented by the prize over time!
