Did Chris McCandless really write "Happiness is only real when shared" in his journal or was this an invention of the movie "Into the Wild" ?

Yeah, it was in the book, "Into the Wild" by John Krakouer. Krakouer researched McCandless endlessly, and he re-traced his footsteps on the Alaskan adventure while he was writing his article, "Death of an Innocent" for Outside magazine in 1993. The article was later expanded into the novel, and then made into the Sean Penn-directed film.

I just finished reading the book, and that part was in it. So I imagine it was real, however I guess no one can really ever prove it.
