Can you keep a football if it is kicked or thrown into the stands at a NFL game? How about college?

It was my understanding that if the kicker managed to miss the field completely (scrimmage, kickoff, field goal, kicking a safety), anything landing in the upper stands was fair game. And it would be common sense that if you managed to get field level seats (or sideline seats!), you should give the ball back. When the ball goes off field into a group of players on the sidelines, you donít see them taking the ball. Same courtesy should be given to college games.
