How many miles should a person run daily? I'm not talking a marathoner but just an athletic person who enjoys running and wants to stay in shape?

If you are in shape you should probably run about 2 to 3 miles everyday, that should be enough time permitting, if you have more time you can run more but its not really needed. Even 1 hour is good to stay in shape but whichever would suit your schedule best.

I realize you asked specifically for mileage, but it's sometimes more helpful to think of it in terms of duration, as ndr535 said, and intensity. An hour at varying speeds and rigorousness (warming up slowly, allowing for a cool down jog) should do just fine, as long as you're pushing yourself in the middle. When it feels like it's too hard, keep going just a bit more; at the same time, pay attention to your body to avoid injury.
